The Union Nationale de l'entreprise, the "Hortis" association and the "Observatoire des villes vertes" work together to draw up an annual price list of the “green cities” in France. On March 14, 2017, the "Observatoire des villes vertes" (Observatory for Green Cities) awarded the third prize to Strasbourg.

The challenge is mainly the content of the biodiversity policy and the environmental protection measures undertaken by the municipalities.

In order to move this price, the Observatory is particularly concerned with the innovative measures taken by the cities, which are responsible for preserving nature in urban areas.

Strasbourg in the Top !

After Angers and Nantes, Strasbourg is in the third greenest city in France.

The continuity of the actions and other projects carried out by the European capital have contributed to this recognition.

For almost ten years, Strasbourg has been banning the use of pesticides used to care for green areas, such as the "Jardin des Deux-Rives", the park of the citadel and the orangery Gardens,

With its 116m2 of green space per inhabitant, Strasbourg doubles the national average. With its plan "Strasbourg Grandeur Nature", the city aims to mix biodiversity with solidarity, and to link the plant with citizenship.

Strasbourg appreciates its rich natural heritage. There are a lot of arguments that allow Strasbourg to qualify as a European capital of sustainable development:

  • 4th bicycle city in the world
  • Winner of the prize "Territoire zéro déchet zéro gaspillage" (zero-waste area)
  • Unique projects focused on sustainable and innovative mobility
  • Development of ecological and environmentally friendly shops
  • Wide range of ecotourism such as kayak itineraries!
